 Not environmentally friendly at all! Apr 28, 2008

Don't be confused into thinking this is environmentally friendly just because one of the bags is green with a picture of the earth on it. Being able to reuse grocery totes is wonderful, but these are made out of polypropylene. Polypropylene is a plastic polymer designed to last for a long time (survive up to thirty years of usage), but is also designed not to decompose in, say, a compost heap.
Even worse than that, polypropylene is one of the many byproducts of the oil refining process. The process produces propylene gas which is made into propylene powder, mixed with several other chemicals, and melted into fiber which is then made into bags like these.
All of this is sold by the Chinese company CYMA at incredibly low prices. Yes, it's great that people want durable long-lasting bags, but it's far wiser to purchase bags made out of biodegradable material like cotton. Plastic will never leave our ecosystem once it's made (indeed, when you "recycle" polypropylene bags, they are shredded and made into plastic waste and other plastic-like products at decreasing efficiency, and the cycle continues until you only have waste).
For more information on environmentally friendly bags, look up the extensive research done by members of CSIRO (the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) and the Australian government.

 Nice idea, but these bags stink! May 31, 2008

They literally stink!
These bags come in cute colors, and I do like to use them for groceries and other things, but I've had them for two weeks and the bad smell still hasn't dissipated. The smell first hit me when I opened the package (smells like gasoline, or something fume-y that gives me a headache).
Originally, I wanted to leave them in my car to have them with me at all times, but after the first night, the fumes had filled the interior of my car and I had to roll down the windows to air it out. I didn't want my almost-one year old daughter to smell this when she rode in the car with me, so each night I air out the bags and put them back into my car. Not exactly convenient. I haven't washed these bags yet, so I'm not sure if the smell will go away after washing, but how many of us are in the habit of washing these bags before use? Also, this material wrinkles quite easily, so I can imagine if I hand-washed these, I shouldn't wring them out.
I was hoping to love these bags, but the terrible smell is overwhelming. I mean, even mattresses and furniture air out in a couple of days. How long will it take these bags?
One note about the strap length- Just a one or two inches longer and I'd be able to use one hand to lift the bag onto my shoulder. As it currently is, the strap is just a tiny bit too short to do so one-handed; I have to use my other hand to hoist the bag onto the opposite shoulder. Just a nitpicky thing- it's the test I do with handbags and such, to make sure I can do things one-handed. It's an important thing to me since the other arm is usually holding a baby.

I have two sets of these bags. I buy for a family of five. They hold so much and are very sturdy. I love that they are not plastered with obnoxious "green" themes (nope, I don't buy into the whole global warming business, but I get tired of throwing all those plastic bags away). At first I had problems with how to carry them while I was shopping. I take my 1, 2 and 4 year olds with me shopping and so have plenty to worry about without having to carry a bunch of bags. When I put them in the cart, they got buried under the groceries, which didn't endear me to the baggers and people behind me in line since I had to unload the cart before they could begin bagging. I finally found my solution. I bought the GIANT 7-3/4" Snap Hook - Carabiner Carry Handle with Soft-Grip and several sets of mini carabiners. I put one mini carabiner on a handle of each bag in case my cart began to overflow. Now I can just hook bags around the sides of the cart and fill the bags. When I go into the store, I have all the bags hooked on the giant carabiner and I simply hook it to the side of the cart. It is easy then at check-out to take the bags off and hand them to the bagger before unloading the cart. If you carry a lot of bags like me, I would also recommend the carabiner. But the bags are great, colorful and sturdy. A great option for my family.

I have been using these bags for a few weeks now and I am really glad that I bought them. Although they looked small when I first opened the box, they hold a lot, are strong, lightweight and very easy to carry. One advantage of having the different colors is that baggers can easily designate a bag for frozen items or non-food items, so I've found that they have been saving me time when I get home to unpack groceries. In response to other comments,they do have a slight chemical odor, but it's not strong enough to bother me. Also, while they may be made of a somewhat environmentally-unfriendly material, they are durable and I am definitely reducing the total amount of waste I produce by using these bags.
